The most dangerous mechanism is not vibration simply spinning the nut. Transverse load creates interface micro-slip, repeatedly unloading thread and bearing surfaces until preload falls. Classic Junker transverse-vibration work identified transverse displacement as a major self-loosening driver. The design goal is a clamped joint that does not slip under service load.
Values in this article support engineering screening during design review, RFQ and prototyping. They do not replace formal calculations, material data sheets, qualified procedures or contractual standards.
MANAGE PRELOAD FIRST
Torque is only an indirect proxy for preload, often approximated by T≈KFd. K varies strongly with friction, coating, lubrication and reuse, producing large preload scatter at one torque. Critical joints may need torque-angle, direct tension, ultrasonic measurement or a validated torque window. More effective grip length, rigid washers, avoidance of soft coating creep and higher interface slip resistance often outperform adding a conventional split washer.
MATCH THE LOCK
Nylon-insert nuts, all-metal prevailing-torque nuts, threadlocker, wedge-lock washers and positive locking each have limits for temperature, chemicals, reuse and installation. None repairs a flexible or under-preloaded joint. Test the production bolt class, finish, lubricant, washer and clamped materials under transverse vibration or durability, recording preload retention rather than judging by hand feel.
